...I can't imagine the driveshaft diff takes a ton of extra time to install. At least not so much that it's a causative factor in why FWDs exist. Also mid-engined cars can have the whole thing dropped in as a unit too.

Anyway, just look at all early transverse mounted cars, notably the original Mini; all are micro tiny and FWD is apparently employed to maximize interior volume and allow for a significantly shorter hood.
