Sycraft scribbled on a napkin: Like I said, the HiDPI stuff relies on pixel doubling for non-compliant apps. So that means you have to choose a display resolution that is double something that would look good (as in not too big, not too small) when halved.
So while it sounds like a silly rez, in that context it makes sense.
