I think that if you're going to impinge upon the rights of an individual there should be a clear, convincing and compelling empirical evidence to illustrate the need to do so. Hell, I don't even think felons should be denied the right to vote. If you've served your time, you've repaid your debt to society, I think your rights should be restored. And that would definitely benefit Republicans more than Democrats in elections, so no political motivations there.
