One of the things that can work in favour of the democrats currently is that the republican party has swung pretty far right in the religious nut sense in recent years. It has been less about fiscal conservatism, and more about "We lurb Jeebus!" That sort of thing doesn't sit well with many moderates, and even many republicans. They are not all about the whole "church in all our lives" thing and in fact real small government types are very much against that.

So, if the democrats can stir them up in to acting extremist, that'll drive more people away from them.

Hence the thing. As you say, none of the people who were going to be pissed off by this would vote for Obama anyhow. However if the people who are pissed off by it howl, scream and throw feces enough it may well drive others to vote for Obama.
