...cover up your crime, you don't rate a "Rest in Peace." All policy differences aside, that was a very personal incident and a very personal display of his moral fiber. You earn respect. If he would have ever come out at any time later in life and said "I regret that I used my place of privilege to sidestep my responsibilities," I would at least respect him for growing as a human being, but he was far too self centered to even admit his humanity.
